There is
a long history of brickmaking in Buckinghamshire and the Matthews
family has played a major role in it.
The business
was founded by Henry George Matthews in 1923 at nearby Lye Green.
The present Bellingdon site was acquired the following year.
It is here that all the Matthews bricks are still made.
After
the death of Henry George Matthews in 1957, the business continued
under the direction of his two sons and daughters and today is
still run by direct descendants of the original founder.
Clay
is still dug from the original clay deposits around Bellingdon
and from nearby Chalfont St. Giles.
Over 2.5
million bricks are made each year and fired in up-draught Scotch
Kilns. H.G. Matthews hand-made bricks are considered by many
to be the finest available.
The company
is justly proud of its reputation for supplying first class
facing bricks, backed up with an efficient and friendly service.
